Harold C. Neu Professor of Medicine, Professor of Epidemiology and Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Centre (NYP/CUMC) Head of the adult Division of Infectious Diseases at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Centre, Dr Hammer is a clinical virologist with a longstanding interest in unraveling the mysteries of persistent viral infections, their symptoms and diseases, and best ways to treat and prevent them. His major investigative interest has been the treatment and prevention of HIV disease. He serves as Principal Investigator of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)-sponsored Columbia Collaborative HIV/AIDS Clinical Trials Unit and has been a long-standing investigator in the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) and the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), chairing a number of major clinical trials. He is the current protocol chair of HVTN 505, a phase 2b test-of-concept efficacy study of the preventive HIV vaccine regimen developed by NIAID’s Vaccine Research Centre. He is a former chair of the Food and Drug Administration’s Antiviral Products Advisory Committee and the International AIDS Society-USA’s Antiretroviral Guidelines Panel, and a former vice chair of the World Health Organization (WHO)’s Strategic and Technical Advisory Committee for HIV/AIDS. He currently serves on the editorial board of the New England Journal of Medicine. |
